The 8th international festival of architecture and urbanism Architecture Week Prague 2014will take place in the Convent of St. George at the Prague Castle and other venues in Prague from September 15 to October 12, 2014, under the patronage of Miloš Zeman, the President of the Czech Republic. Traditionally organized by the Czech Architecture Week company in cooperation with the Prague Castle Administration, the main theme of this year’s festival is Architectonic Heritage and Icons. The aim of the festival is to introduce architecture and architectonic heritage to the Czech as well as foreign public through numerous exhibitions, mainly the one called Architecture in Space and Time showing examples of outstanding buildings and architects that became icons of their times. This exhibition, curated by Czech architect Miroslav Řepa, will present architectonic styles from pre-roman architecture till present through models, photographs, drawings, and sketches.There will be other exhibitions in the Convent of St. George at the Prague Castle: traditional presentation of contemporary world architecture Arch World 2014,exhibition World Architects on Architecture, Josip Plečnik: Sketches, Le Corbusier: Chandigarh, Architectonic Project of the Year 2014, Prague Heart of Europe,For Example. New Polish House, or student exhibitions Olověný Dušan 2014 andIdeas for Kulaťák.
Like in the previous years, this year’s festival again features lectures of Czech and foreign architects not only for students of architecture but also for professional and non-professional public, taking place at the Faculty of Architecture of the Czech Technical University. The festival will thus present Swiss architect Tilo Herlach from HHF Architects, Mexican architect Juan Pablo Serrano from Serrano Monjaraz Arquitectos, Julien Veyron from a French studio Atelier arcau, Austrian architect Johannes Baar-Baarenfels from Baar-Baarenfels Architekten, Johan Anrys from Belgian office 51N4E, Spanish architect Juan Antonio González from GPY Arquitectos (lecturing at Instituto Cervantes), Zvi Hecker from Israeli office Zvi Hecker Architects, Venezuelan architect Fruto Vivas, Sefano Boeri from Italy (Stefano Boeri Architects), there will be a block of lectures by Czech and Polish architects speaking about Contemporary house, Belgian architect Pablo Lhoas from Lhoas & Lhoas Architects, Francisco Pulido from Helmut Janhn Architects will come from the USA, and Moshe & Orna Tzur from Israeli office Moshe Tzur Architects will speak on the same day.
As usual, we are also preparing architectural walks together with the Prague Information Service for the public focused on the evolution of architectonic styles.
The second year of the international project Playful Architect 2014 for schoolchildren aged 9 - 11 will present works by 750 children from 30 cities in the CR and other V4 countries (Slovakia, Poland, and Hungary), as well as Florence, Italy. The project is aiming to introduce architecture and art in architecture to schoolchildren through discussions and creative work and to educate them to be able to appreciate architecture and architectonic heritage. The children’s works will be shown in a exhibition at the Prague Castle and the participating children will spend one daythere with amusing program including a guided tour, workshops, and discussions led by renowned Czech architects.
International expert conference Contemporary Architecture in Historical Context - Maintenance of Historical Urban Landscape will take place on September 30, 2014 in the Residence of the Lord Mayor of the City of Prague. The conference will host UNESCO representatives, domestic as well as foreign architects and experts on architectonic heritage conservation. They will discuss questions linked with the implementation of contemporary architecture into the historical environment of cities based on the analysis of the new concepts of the cultural heritage and their adaptability to historical cities, relationship between urban landscape and time, forms, and functions of architecture and urban economy. The speakers will be among others: Chinese architect Ma Yansong from MAD ARCHITECTS, Nikolaus Goetze from German office GMP ARCHITEKTEN, Karim Adnré Hendili and Michael Turner from WHC UNESCO, or Elena Svalduz and Andrea Giordano from University of Padua. Entrance to the conference is for the invited only.
