The first Baroque palace in Prague was built as an aristocratic home in 1623-1630 by the Imperial General Albrecht Václav Eusebius Waldstein.

The Waldstein Palace, originally supposed to outdo even the Prague Castle with its size and interiors, was built in place of 26 houses in the Lesser Quarter. Its style is a mixture of late Renaissance and early Baroque, which became the leading style of the 17th century. Most of the artists who worked on the construction of the palace were of Italian origin – Giovanni Pieroni, Andrea Spezza , Nicolo Sebregondi and others. The main hall of the palace encompasses 2 floors and is made even larger by the use of mirrored windows. The ceiling fresco portrays Albrecht of Waldstein as the god of war Mars on a triumphal chariot. Three smaller chambers decorated with copies of charming Flemish tapestries adjoin the main hall. The chapel on the northern side of the palace boasts stucco work and pictures from the life of St Wenceslas and takes up the entire height of the palace.

From the courtyard one can enter into the Waldstein garden and admire the monumental sala terrena, covered inside with elaborate stucco and paintings, which opens onto the garden with three arches. The main walk in the garden is lined with bronze copies of antique gods which were created in 1626 by the Dutch sculptor Adrian de Vries who lived in Prague. The original statues were taken in 1648 by the Swedes as war loot. In the summer concerts and plays are performed in the garden which was reconstructed in 1955. The garden is closed off by the Waldstein riding school, built in 1630, and today an exhibition space for the National Gallery.
