After his pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1138, the Bishop Henry Zdik of Olomouc had the idea of establishing a monastery of Canons Regular in Prague with assistance from the Bishops of Prague and the Czech rulers Soběslav II. and Vladislav II. This was the beginning of the Premonstratensian abbey, which left a permanent trace in the Czech history.
When the visitors enter the monastery through the main gate from Pohořelec, they see on their left-hand side the Church of St.Rochus, which is nowadays used as an exhibition hall. Opposite the main gate there is the entrance to the Basilica of Assumption of Our Lady, where the relics of St Norbert, the founder of the Order, are kept.
There is the entrance to exhibition of the historical monastery library just next to the entrance into the Basilica. It is the second oldest church library in Bohemia. It holds about 280 000 volumes, 3000 of which are manuscripts and 1500 incunabula. The oldest manuscript is the Strahov Evangeliary, dated back to 860.
A part of the tour is the entrance exhibition, the Cabinet of Curiosities, the Philosophical and Theological Halls, and the corridor with medical and legal books. You can see a copy of the Strahov Evangeliary and a unique "electric machine" from the 18th century at the end of this corridor.
The Strahov Monastery is a real treasury of art and knowledge, holding priceless valuables on a relatively small space.
LATEST NEWS: The major reconstruction of the Philosophical Hall has been finished from 70 %. Its festive reopening will be held on 9.12.2010, when you will be able to see the Hall in all its original glory again.
There will be a grand opening of an exhibition in the Romanesque Halls on the very same day. This permanent exhibition has a very interesting conception and presents the history of the Strahov Monastery and the Premonstratensian Order.
