Situated on the southern side of the Prague Castle, this palace - originally a princely one, from the 13th century a royal one - was the seat of the head of state until the end of the 16th century when the Habsburgs moved to the western part of the Castle. The rooms of the Old Royal Palace then served mostly as offices, sometimes as storage space.

Deep beneath the Vladislav Hall a large basement hall and part of the ground floor of Soběslav’s palace from the 12th century remain intact. This was also the location where the oldest palaces, partially wooden, used to stand. The later palaces of Přemysl Otakar II, Charles IV and Wenceslas IV were built above Soběslav’s original palace. They are preserved in the lower floors of today’s palace. At the end of the 15th century Vladislav Jagellon rebuilt and enlarged the top floor of the palace of which the Vladislav Hall became the centre piece.

The entrance into the Royal Palace leads from the third courtyard of the Prague Castle. As you enter you pass the Baroque Eagle Fountain from 1664. To the left of the entrance hall is the Green Chamber, which was used during the reign of Charles IV as a
court room. Adjoining this room is the so-called Vladislav bedroom and one other room - the depository of the Land Rolls.
