One of the loveliest streets of Prague is named after the poet and journalist Jan Neruda, who lived in the House at the Two Suns and the House at the Three Black Eagles. This street used to be the main route leading up to the Prague Castle. Most of the houses are built in the high Baroque style and have typical house signs on the front facades.

These house signs used to be used for orientation until houses started being numbered in 1770. They continued being popular even after this date, so many of the signs are from the Classical or Empire period. The signs often reflected the profession, social standing or character of the house owner, though sometimes the owners took the house sign as their own name. Prague houses signs are made of stone, stucco, iron, wood, they are painted on plaster or metal, sometimes they also contain an inscription. Of interest is also their thematic range.

Apart from Neruda Street, which has the largest number of houses signs, they can also be found elsewhere in Prague - for instance in other areas of the Lesser Quarter and in the vicinity of the Old Town Square (the Small Square, Ungelt, Celetná, Železná, Melantrichova, Karlova, Husova, etc.)
