The Maisel Synagogue is one of the several preserved synagogues of the Prague Jewish Quarter. The original building from the years 1590-1592 had three naves divided by twenty pillars. Side naves for women were later built onto the main nave accessible only to men. Between the years 1893-1905 the synagogue was reconstructed by the architect Alfréd Grotte in the neo-Gothic style. In the period before the second world war reformed services were held here and an organ was installed.
During the occupation the Nazis turned the synagogue into a storehouse for furniture taken from the flats of deported Jews. Today the Maisel Synagogue is part of the Jewish Museum and offers an interesting exhibition on the subject of Jewish communities living in the Czech lands from the 10th – 18th century.
