The monumental palace with its 150 metre long façade was founded in 1669 by the Imperial ambassador in Venice, Jan Humprecht Černín of Chudenic.

The building site was chosen at one of the highest point in Prague (275 metres above sea level), 18 metres higher than the floor of the St Vitus Cathedral. Černín was set on constructing a prestigious building that would stand out over the surrounding buildings.

The Černín Palace was originally an early Baroque four-winged building with a transversal wing and two courtyards. Most of the workmen working on the plans, the construction of the building and stonemasonry were Italian, led by Francesco Carrati until his death.

In 1720 the palace was adapted and completed by František M. Kaňka, who designed the representational staircases and the
comfortable interiors. Inside the palace there is an imposing staircase with a ceiling fresco by Václav Vavřinec Reiner depicting the Fall of the Titans. The ground-floor rooms of the palace boast paintings from the end of the 17th century and on the 2nd floor painted ceilings have been preserved.

Due to its size the palace often became a target for foreign armies. After the Prussian bombardment and the damage caused by the French occupational army in the middle of the 18th century the palace was again adapted by Anselmo Lurago. During this period an orangery was built in the garden into which the 2 salla terrena’s open onto.

Due to the expense of the construction work the Černín family fell into debt and moved to Vienna. The palace was therefore left vacant and for a short period became a home to Prague’s poor. In 1851 the building was turned into barracks. In the 20th century it became the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On March 10th 1948 the Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Masaryk died falling from a window of the palace.
