The Old-New Synagogue in Prague is the oldest synagogue in Europe. It was built around the year 1270 in early Gothic style and belongs amongst the oldest preserved Gothic monuments in Prague. The origin of the name “Old-New” is unclear and there are several explanations. According to one version a new synagogue was built on old foundations and hence the name. Another explanation says that it received its name in the 17th century when another synagogue, then called the New Synagogue, was built in the Jewish town.

The interior of the Old-New Synagogue is divided into several sections. The largest part is a double aisled prayer room with an unusual five-ribbed vaulted ceiling. A fifth rib had to be added so that the vaulted ceiling did not create the impression of a Christian cross. The centre of the synagogue is taken up by a beautiful almemor, surrounded by a wrought iron railing from the 15th century. The exhibited banner of the Prague Jewish community also draws the attention of visitors. At the beginning of the 14th century a vestibule was added to the synagogue; the two money-boxes for collecting taxes were built in the 17th century. The side nave for women was built in the 18th century. The main prayer room of the synagogue was used only by men. Both brick gables date from the 14th century.
