Jazz’s enfant terrible returns to Strings of Autumn for his third appearance, this time in tandem with one of the world’s most sought-after opera singers. A meeting of two musicians who blur the lines between genres.
For some, Brad Mehladu is the enfant terrible of jazz; for others, a musical expeditionary. He is certainly the most fascinating jazz pianist of his generation – though ‘jazz pianist’ is perhaps to narrow a term for Mehldau, who has long incorporated elements of pop, folk, and classical music into his playing and compositions. He is as respected an interpreter of Radiohead and Nick Drake as he is of Thelonious Monk. He studied classical piano and composition at Berkeley School of Music, and this project with von Otter is by no means his first live foray into the genre. His 2006 collaboration with another great soprano, Renee Fleming, received copious praise. Mehldau’s latest recording, Highway Rider, features original compositions scored for jazz trio and chamber orchestra.
This will be Mehldau’s third appearance at Strings of Autumn, following rapturously-received concerts (one solo, one with trio) in 2006 and 2007.
Anne Sofie von Otter’s place in the pantheon of great opera singers is assured, and she is a regular soloist at the great opera houses of London, Paris, Vienna, and New York. With her natural charm, infectious humour, and playful sense of irony, she is an artist who has always been intent on going her own way. Never afraid to make the step across genre boundaries, she has recorded a successful album with rock singer Elvis Costello, and now pairs up with Mehldau, one of the leading lights of jazz.
