The Municipal House in Prague was built in the place where the King’s Court - a royal palace inhabited from the time of Wenceslas IV up until Vladislav Jagellon’s reign - stood from the end of the 14th century. A plaque on the Municipal House reminds us of the fact that it was here that Jiří of Poděbrady, first as the country’s governor and from 1458 as the Czech king, lived from 1454 onwards.

The Art Nouveau building of the Municipal House was built during the years 1906-1911 according to the plans of Antonín Balšánek and Osvald Polívka.

Important Czech artists of the beginning of the 20th century - such as Alfons Mucha, Max Švabinský, Jan Preisler, František Ženíšek, Mikoláš Aleš, Josef Václav Myslbek and Josef Mařatka – took part in decorating the 6 halls and representational spaces of the Municipal House.

The building contains concert halls, a café, restaurant, wine bar, halls for balls and exhibitions. At one stage the building that stood in place of the Municipal House up until 1905 was used as a seminary and later as an army training school for officers.

The creation of the new independent Czechoslovak Republic was proclaimed from the balcony of the Municipal House on October 28th 1918.
