The tradition of writing on the walls in the Lesser Town probably first originated on the garden wall of the house belonging to the actor Jan Werich who lived at Kampa and people wrote various messages on the wall of his garden, but also examples of their own works. The flaking walls at Kampa have also become a place for art happenings of several Czech artists since 1960s.
However, the best known wall in the Lesser Town is definitely the wall of the Maltese Garden in the Velkopřevorské Square, later known as John Lennon wall.
It was here that somebody created a little John Lennon memorial in reaction to his killing in the middle of December 1980. They used a blank stone slab which probably used to serve as part of public water mains in the past, and wrote “To John Lennon” with a chalk on it, drawing a cross above it. Soon, candles, flowers, photos, and a drawing of the shot singer were added. The wall was gradually coming to life with new writings, even after it was repainted or changed to a billboard.
