In the year 2010 it will be 700 years from the accession of the Luxembourg dynasty onto the Czech throne. During and namely at the end of the year, the celebrations and reminders of this significant anniversary in the Czech Republic will be in progress. The expositions are being prepared for example in Prague and Ostrava.
Prague will join in the celebrations by organising an exposition in the House of the Stone Bell on the Old Town Square. The exhibition shall, in a representative manner and at the level of the latest scientific findings, remind the historical significance of the dynastic interconnection of the Central and Western Europe and the political inheritance of the first person of the ancestry, Jan of Luxembourg, on the Czech throne, who on the stroke of 3rd December, 1310 took possession of Prague and married Eliška Přemyslovna. The 700th anniversary of the coronation of this royal couple falls onto 7th February.
Due to the mentioned historical events the Luxembourg dynasty acceded on the Czech throne, which took over the political and cultural legacy of the last descendants of the Přemysl dynasty, adding the country a European format and creating a big power from the Czech state – the Commonwealth of the Czech Crown. Prague under the rule of Luxembourgs became a political centre of the medieval Holy Roman Empire and the most important cultural metropolis in the north of the Alps and east of the Rhine. It will commemorate the first Czech king of the Luxembourg dynasty, his royal family, and also the personality of the Queen Eliška and her origins in the Přemysl dynasty. A significant part of the exhibition will focus on a wider contemporary context and namely the importance of Prague in the period of the turn of 13th and 14th centuries and the first half of the 14th century. Lending of exhibits for the presentation will be provided by a range of important Czech and foreign institutions.
Within the framework of the exposition various accompanying events will be held in the hall on the 2nd floor of the House of the Stone Bell: for example an international colloquium on the topic of “Marriages as a cultural exchange”, an international symposium “Capital cities and residential towns in medieval monarchies”, concerts and lectures for the public. The date of venue of the exhibition has been scheduled to be held from the beginning of September or the beginning of December 2010 to the end of January or the beginning of February 2011.
Anther exhibition is being prepared by the city of Ostrava. Here the exhibition will be divided into three parts: the first one will focus on fine arts of Moravia and Silesia until the 1st half of the 14th century, the second one on history and archaeology of the "Moravian-Silesian" frontier approximately at the same time, the third one will put the main emphasis on historical paintings of the 19th century in connection to the personality of Jan of Luxembourg. Lending of exhibits has been preliminarily arranged in the Czech Republic (Prague, Brno, Olomouc) and also in Europe (Germany, the Netherlands). Moreover, an edition of a representative catalogue is being prepared for publication.
