The first location in Prague to become a protected natural monument as early as 1964 was the area of Divoká Šárka. This romantic rocky valley is located on the outskirts of Prague near the airport and is relatively well-known, but still it astonishes every new visitor with its unexpected natural scenery in the territory of the capital city.
The best access to Divoká Šárka is from the tram terminal of the same name taking the tarmac road though the valley. You can park your car at the McDonald's parking lot from which you can follow the red trail marks. McDonald’s is the last characteristic representative of our consumer civilisation here, and the gate to another world. Behind it, as if by magic, the fabulous landscape opens. Rocks, a deep canyon, meadows, forests where you can encounter foxes, crystal clear water, and all this on an area of tens of hectares.
Šárka has become a popular destination for climbers as well as for summer trips to water, because besides an old familiar restaurant there is a beautiful classic natural swimming pool in the valley. While the water is cold, it is clear and refreshing. Water is fed to the pools from the Šárecký stream, and the pools were concreted in 1940s in place of the former pond belonging to miller Alois Veselík whose family is inseparably connected with Divoká Šárka.
