The new exhibition Marathon 2500, taking place in the New Building of the National Museum, wants to commemorate three things: 2500 years from the Battle of Marathon and the run of the Greek soldier Pheidippides to Athens with the message of victory, the winner of the Olympic marathon in 1952 Emil Zátopek and the important sportingly-cultural event: the 16th Prague International Marathon, patronated by Emil Zátopek in the first years.
A part of the exhibition is an overview of the marathon winners at the Olympics and at the World Championships in Athletics. Visitors can see the gold Olympic medal of Emil Zátopek for winning the marathon at the Olympics in 1952. From the collections of the Department of Physical Training and Sport of the National Museum there are exhibited a commemorative and a participant medal from the first Olympic Games in 1896, medals from the marathon races organized in Czechoslovakia, the gold medal of Emil Zátopek from the European Championship 1954 and also commemorative and participant medals and souvenirs of Emil Zátopek.
Co-organizer of the exhibition, the organizing committee of the Prague International Marathon, lent to the National Museum the documentation of the past years of the race. Among posters and photographs one can also see medals from the particular years of the race, t-shirts and souvenirs. Another interesting part of the exhibition are lekythi (ancient small clay vases for oils which were put into graves together with dead), ornamented with scenes of farewell before departing to a battle, views of heavy fights of mythological heroes and flying goddess Nike bringing the sash of victory in the age of the Greco-Persian wars around 490 B.C.
